    Local signal: always heard unless strong enhancement or other propagation modes overtake it

The western mountains: Franconia Notch
 
Franconia Notch on the western side of the White Mountain National Forest contains the most stunning scenery in the Northeast. The highly recognizable narrow mountain pass through the White Mountains has long attracted visitors to behold its spectacular beauty and well-known attractions. The sheer Cannon Cliffs and the towering Franconia Ridge create dramatic scenery unrivaled in this part of the country. Franconia Notch State Park, the jewel of the New Hampshire State Parks system, has gained nationwide recognition for its grandeur. The first aerial tramway in America climbs to the 4,100-foot summit of Cannon, while eight miles to the south, adventurers take a walkway 90 feet to the bottom of the Flume Gorge to fill their senses with the awe of geological glaciation, waterfalls and natural history.   Click to view the Franconia Notch bandscan map

About the bandscan site: Details

Due to the narrow nature of Franconia Notch, stations originating from the northwest (Montréal) and southeast (Boston) tend to be highly enhanced while stations from the east are either affected by multipath or outright blocked by the high cliffs and tall mountain peaks. While the site, at the base of 4,100-foot Cannon Mountain, is just a mile north-northeast of the mountain's peak, many Vermont stations endure, many of the strongest transmitting from atop peaks themselves. Intensifying reception issues to the east is 5,260-foot Mount Lafayette, whose peak is just two miles to the east-southeast and is among the ten highest in New Hampshire. Terrain to the north is relatively open. Notable signals here include those from Mont Royal overlooking downtown Montréal, Mont Orford just outside Magog and Sherbrooke, and Mount Mansfield fifteen miles outside Burlington. The site is 82 miles west-northwest of Portland, 85 miles south of Sherbrooke, 131 miles southeast of Montréal, and 131 miles north-northwest of Boston.

The eastern mountains: Mount Washington Valley
 
The Mount Washington Valley, gateway to the 780,000 acre White Mountain National Forest, is made up of North Conway and its surrounding villages. Here you will find a plentiful supply of New England's trademark white clapboard buildings, tall steepled churches, romantic covered bridges and good old general stores. The area is home to numerous recreational opportunities, including skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, golfing, fishing, camping, outlet shopping, and scenic tours. Operating trains from a beautiful 1874 Victorian station in downtown North Conway is the Conway Scenic Railroad, taking passengers multiple times per day throughout the valley as well as to Crawford Notch. Overlooking the valley is Mount Washington, which at 6,288 feet, is the highest peak in the northeast.   Click to view the Mount Washington Valley bandscan map

About the bandscan site: Details

Unlike the Franconia Notch site, the Mount Washington Valley site on the east side of the White Mountains is less restricted by tall mountain peaks. Yet that doesn't mean it's out of the woods; the site is in a heavily wooded lot at the southwest base of 3,268-foot Mount Kearsarge (just over 2 miles from the peak) and Mount Washington - the tallest peak in the northeast - towers above the valley fifteen miles to the northwest. Just seven miles from Maine, the site is only 150 feet above the nearby towns of North Conway, just over two miles to the south-southeast, and Intervale. While Mount Kearsarge appears to have little effect on reception from the east - stations from as far east as Bangor are regulars here - the mountains to the west allow virtually nothing from Vermont. Both Mount Mansfield powerhouse stations are easily received and one additional station not blocked by the mountains can be heard from Southern Vermont. Luckily, some of the highest peaks are still some miles to the west and northwest, allowing all three stations broadcasting atop Mont Orford to leapfrog over Mount Washington, which stands directly in their path. This bandscan site is just 55 miles west-northwest of Portland. With nothing in their paths, many Portland stations are strong locals, IBOC included. Boston is 121 miles to the south; stations from this area are very common and may be received with local-like reception after sunset. With fringe signals, Sherbrooke is 96 miles to the north-northwest and Montréal 154 miles to the northwest.
